it’s curious how it turned out
maybe the carousel sped too fast
or perhaps dusk played tricks on the lens
but the irony of the photograph
is that the lines were blurred
a depiction of what was meant to be
starting over, on the merry go round
of life, love and other such complications
once upon a time it had been clear
glittered with fun, ups and downs
though mostly ups, you’d hoped
it’s not like you hadn’t ridden these horses
before, and now we were here too
saddled up alongside you
(misery loves company)
as the fairground man said
“everybody off, this ride is over”
Written in response to dVerse Poets Poetics prompt for which we were asked to write about the fairground!

the merry go round
of life, love and other such complications…life can take us on difficult rides sometimes and the lines blur…felt write for sure..still hoping though that the fairground man allows me another round or two to de-blur things again and get the glitter back…an emotional write vanessa
It was, although not my emotions so in this instance it seemed appropriate to hold back.
Merry go-round turning into a treadmill?
A real impression of going too fast so that nothing sticks in your mind.
That old rollercoaster called life can get a bit rough now and then can’t it?
I never did like the carousel.
Nice write~!
Thank you, pleased you enjoyed it.
oh yes I remember the clear glittered with fun…thank you for reminding me…powerful write and depiction of reality.
Good to see you back again so soon…thank you Len x
hard on the emotions this one…the point when the ride is over…its not easy…even when you are ready…but then again are we ever really ready for a ride to be over….i thought you did well with this…
Thanks Brian really appreciate your comment.
Rides like that end so quickly…I specially like the blurred lines ~ Lovely write ~
love the use of emotions and metaphor here, very nicely done. Excellent read. Thanks
Good stuff
Nick
Cheers Nick!
Really great piece… lovely metaphor.
Thank you for stopping by Laurie xx
once upon a time it was clear, but that was really an illusion
/roller coaster of dysfunction
This is a very poignant ride with a too common ending. It’s no wonder children cry when the ride is over.
They do indeed, very sad.
A very thoughtful, dare I say it, ‘mature’ poem, summed up by the qualification at the end. A rate this very highly.
Thank you, so kind of you to say so! You’ve made my Sunday…
A poem that runs deeper each time you read it … I dare say there’s a bit of a lot us in there …nicely worked piece
Well, that’s life aint it? Just when you’re having fun… Excellent write, a lot of fun, but rather more than that.
Really love the emotion in this, and the last line is a stinger! Nicely done!

Thanks Charles, and not too long this time I hope?! I will be over to have a read of yours this evening, look forward to your interpretation of fun at the fair!
Loved the bittersweet emotions captured here, the innocent ride that became a sickening whirl until you realize, there will be an end. May it keep spinning!
Thank you, bittersweet indeed. Not always the fun of the fair! Appreciate you stopping by.
I enjoyed this poem, the way a simple story of the merry-go-round is made emotional and described and the deeper metaphorical discussion about life.
Nice work!
Thank you, yes it was meant to be a time representing happiness and moving on but in fact the happy family picture never did end up coming back into focus.
I’m somehow relieved and sad to hear the barker’s parting words. Nicely put.
Thank you Julie, lovely to have you visit and comment.
