Homesick – Free Write Friday

It’s like you feel homesick
for a place that doesn’t even exist
Eternally tethered to a time,
a sense you can’t put your finger on
something once so alive, forgotten

It’s like a misplaced memory
a phantom or a wisp now gone
Unbearable and as painful
as a broken heart, this yearning
for restoration of the whole

It’s like an unfinished sentence
all meaning lost in missing words
So much to say, confined to thoughts
punctuated only by the regret we feel
for the damage that can’t be undone

And I know we’ll find our way back
trace pieces from the breadcrumb trail
For this stomach churn, this lost beat
can’t settle in safety without you
so I’ll wait here for your return

  1. Oh neat!! This brought me down a similar path with memories!! I love what you’ve done and especially,

    “It’s like an unfinished sentence
all meaning lost in missing words”

    Very nice!

    🙂

  2. its like a unfinished sentence all meaning lost in the missing words….that part really got me…you def convey the feeling in your words …how long though will you wait….smiles

  3. You have written a poem with universal appeal as you can see from the response – I too liked the unfinished sentence… line – lots of clever imagery that we can all relate to. I liked the phantom line too…
    and then you threw these lines out to catch anyone who wasn’t already hooked, at the end;
    this lost beat
can’t settle in safety without you
so I’ll wait here for your return

  4. THAT is EXACTLY what it’s like! Vanessa, you made me smile from ear to ear seeing that you wrote for my fwf. I can’t thank you enough for the privilege of having you here and for your beautiful piece. Love love love ♥

  5. Your poem reflects a forlorn heart so well. And your words speak so softly of how time and memories fuse together and how suddenly we want to return to a place that maybe never existed but in our hearts…… Well done Vanessa….!
